What makes us different?

Most commercially produced products are made to sit on a shelf for months (if not years) before finally making it to the end consumer.  This means they have to be loaded with chemicals and preservatives in order to be free of potential germs, mold and/or mildew that could lead to sickness or product spoilage.   However, all these chemicals are themselves likely not "good" for the human body.  This has been extensively debated in the literature, but enough evidence exists for me to want these chemicals out of my family's bodies.  For this reason, at "Great Scentsations", all of our products are made with products found in nature with no preservatives (if possible), and only a naturally found preservative when absolutely necessary.
In addition, most commercial products use inferior synthetic fragrances for the scents in their products. They do this because they are cheap to manufacture and highly potent, and they are concerned with making a profit above all else. However, these synthetic fragrances/chemicals have also been linked to many health issues. These big companies don't really care about your health. At Great ScentSations we only use Essential Oils to scent our products. When properly diluted, Essential Oils are very safe, effective and even promote health rather than impede it.

Made to order? - We run our business out of our small 1600 sq ft home (with very limited storage space), therefore we have very limited stock and most products are only made upon receiving an order.  This means you get the freshest product possible.  However, please do not expect 1- or 2-day shipping.  We receive orders and manufacture products throughout the week and ship out all orders Friday and Saturday.  This also allows us to customize some products to our customer's request.

Packaging! -  We do not waste money on fancy packaging and labeling.  All our labels are created with simple software and printed at our home, then hand placed on the appropriate container (they might even be slightly crooked as a result).  Instead of wasting money on fancy designs, we spend on high quality ingredients.  We figure quality products are more important than fancy advertising (and hope you will agree). We even try to reuse the boxes we receive our merchandise in to send out our products to you, in order to decrease our impact on the environment.

Cruelty-Free:  Our products are tested on ourselves, friends and family.  They have never and never will be tested on animals.  We are a family of animal lovers and would never test anything on animals.  We also have no fear of testing products on ourselves since everything we use is natural and non-toxic.

  • Consciously Created: With your health and the planet in mind.

What's wrong with commercial soaps, deodorants and beauty products?

According to many studies and experts, commercial soaps and deodorants contain harmful ingredients that could pose health risks to the users and the environment, including the following:

  • Aluminum compounds: These are added to deodorants in order to block sweat ducts and reduce perspiration, but they may be linked to breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as inhibiting a normal bodily function.

  • Parabens: These are synthetic preservatives that may disrupt hormonal balance and increase the risk of breast cancer.

  • Fragrance: This term can include undisclosed, mostly synthetic chemicals that may cause skin irritation, allergies, and hormonal disruptions.

  • Propylene glycol: This is a synthetic chemical that may cause skin irritation and damage to the kidney and liver.

  • Triclosan: This is an antibacterial agent that may contribute to antibiotic resistance and environmental damage.

  • TEA and DEA: These are chemicals used to adjust the pH in products, but they may have carcinogenic effects.

Benefits of switching to natural soaps, deodorants and beauty products:

  • Safer ingredients: Natural products are made with simple, recognizable ingredients (like baking soda, olive oil, coconut oil, almond oil, hempseed oil, avocado oil, shea butter, cocoa butter, arrowroot powder and essential oils, etc) and do not contain harmful chemicals or synthetic fragrances.

  • Reduced health risks: By avoiding potentially harmful ingredients, natural products reduce the exposure to substances that could have negative health impacts.

  • Environmentally friendly: Our products come in recyclable packaging and do not contain chemicals that can harm aquatic life when they wash down the drain.

  • Essential Oils are absorbed well by the skin, but do not accumulate.  They do their thing and then pass on through, many with health enhancing properties along the way. Some synthetic chemicals can accumulate in our systems and cause all kinds of damage and health concerns.

  • Effective odor control: Contrary to the misconception that natural deodorants are less effective, our deodorants are highly efficient at keeping you fresh throughout the day and sometimes for multiple days.

  • Cruelty-free:  As noted previously, our products are tested on ourselves.  They have never been and never will be tested on animals.

The Science Behind Our Ingredients:

We believe in transparency. Here's a closer look at the natural powerhouses in our products:

  • Essential Oils: Beyond their beautiful aromas, our plant-based essential oils are potent antimicrobials, effectively controlling odor at its source, and offering diverse aromatherapy benefits, from calming to uplifting scents, and contributing to healthier, soothed skin.

  • Witch Hazel: This multi-purpose natural base helps decrease odor-causing bacteria by lowering skin pH and minimizing pores. Rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, it soothes irritation, reduces redness, and helps keep your skin clear and balanced.

  • Perfumer's alcohol:  Perfumer's alcohol serves as a primary solvent, dissolving and blending essential oils and other compounds to create a homogeneous liquid fragrance.  It is also a carrier and dispersant, as it “carries” the fragrance molecules with it during evaporation (providing the initial “scent throw”).  Lastly, it acts as a natural preservative to keep the products free of microbial growth.

  • Baking Soda:  In Deodorants it is an effective odor neutralizer and absorbent.  It creates an alkaline environment that inhibits the growth of odor-causing bacteria and absorbs moisture.  In Bath Bombs it is a key component for the fizzing reaction - creating the characteristic effervescent bubbles.

  • Distilled water: provides a clean, inert, and stable base that ensures product safety, effectiveness, and longevity by avoiding impurities and microbes in tap water that can result in bacterial growth.

  • Natural solubilizers: allow oils (like essential oils and carrier oils) to evenly disperse and dissolve in water-based products (such as lotions and body sprays).   Since oil and water naturally separate, a solubilizer creates a stable, clear, and uniform mixture, preventing essential oils from floating on top or causing irritation due to undiluted “hot spots” of oil on the skin.

  • Tapioca Starch: jjjj

  • Coconut, Almond, Hemp Seed, Olive, Grapeseed, Jojoba Oils: jjjj

  • Magnesium hydroxide: is used in natural products as an odor neutralizer and gentle alternative to baking soda.  It works by raising the skin’s pH to create an environment where odor-causing bacteria cannot thrive, effectively preventing body odor without blocking sweat glands like antiperspirants.  It is often preferred for sensitive skin as it’s typically less irritating than baking soda.

  • Shea Butter: is a superstar ingredient in natural products due to its exceptional moisturizing, nourishing, and protective properties.  It’s rich in fatty acids and vitamins (like A and E) that deeply hydrate, soften, and soothe the skin.  In deodorants, it helps condition the skin and prevent irritation.  In lotions, soaps, and lip balms, it locks in moisture, improves skin barrier function, and provides a smooth, supple feel.  It also possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits, promoting overall skin health.

  • Arrowroot powder: serves as a natural absorbent in deodorants, helping to soak up moisture and keep the skin feeling dry.  In bath bombs and shower steamers, it acts as a binding agent and filler that helps create a stable, slow-dissolving fizz when combined with baking soda and citric acid, and can also contribute to a silky feel in the bathwater.

  • Beeswax: acts as a thickener, emulsifier, and protective barrier.  It helps provide structure and texture to products like lip balms, lotion bars and stick deodorants in order to maintain their shape.  It also helps bind oil and water components, creating a more stable and smooth emulsion that prevents separation.  When applied to the skin it forms a protective barrier that helps lock in moisture, protect against environmental irritants, and soothe dry, chapped skin without clogging pores.

  • Activated charcoal:  primarily acts as a powerful odor neutralizer and detoxifier.  Its highly porous structure allows it to effectively adsorb (bind to) odor-causing bacteria, toxins, and impurities, helping to draw them out from the skin and keep underarms fresh and dry.  This makes it an excellent ingredient for combating body odor without relying on aluminum or other harsh chemicals.

Why Essential Oils?

Why use only essential oils for all the scents in our products?  Simple...we care about you and the environment.  Essential oils (in addition to smelling great) have powerful effects that can enhance the effectiveness of our body care products.

Essential oils "do their thing" and then pass safely out of our bodies very quickly.  Some synthetic chemicals linger in your body for a very long time (if not forever) and can be very unhealthy.  A lot of these synthetic chemicals have been linked to hormonal imbalances, increasing cancer risk and/or damaging the central nervous system, in addition to causing allergic reactions, skin sensitization and rashes, and environmental pollution.

Yes, they are much more expensive than their synthetic counterparts, but the extra benefits and safety of essential oils makes this extra cost more than worth it.  How much is your health and that of your loved ones worth to you?

Some of the benefits imparted by Essential Oils that can not be obtained with synthetic chemicals include:  natural moisturization, supporting relaxation, skin soothing, easing itching, muscle soothing, cleansing, deodorizing, energizing, detoxifying, supporting respiration, calming, promoting rest/relaxation, promoting circulation, and many many more.
